Not all botanical ingredients are farmed. Many of Africa's most prized skincare oils come from wild plants that have never been domesticated - and may never need to be. Understanding the difference between wild-harvesting and cultivation helps explain why our ingredients are the way they are, and why that matters.
Wild-Harvesting: Working with Nature
Wild-harvesting means collecting plant material from naturally occurring, unmanaged populations. The Kalahari melon, for example, grows wild across millions of hectares of southern Africa. No fertilizers, irrigation, or pesticides are involved. The plant is entirely self-sustaining.
The advantages of wild-harvested ingredients:
- No agricultural inputs: No synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers in the ingredient chain
- Genetic diversity: Wild populations maintain much higher genetic diversity than monoculture farms, contributing to resilience and phytochemical richness
- Ecosystem preservation: Sustainable wild-harvesting provides economic incentive for communities to protect natural ecosystems rather than convert them to agriculture
- Authentic potency: Plants that have evolved under natural conditions - including UV stress, drought, and competition - often produce higher concentrations of protective compounds
The Challenges of Wild-Harvesting
Wild-harvesting requires careful management to prevent over-exploitation. Unlike farming, you cannot simply plant more to meet demand. This means:
- Production volumes are inherently limited by natural availability
- Quality can vary by season and microclimate
- Supply chains require longer lead times and more sophisticated logistics
When Farming Makes Sense
For some ingredients, cultivation offers advantages: rooibos (Aspalathus linearis), for example, is now primarily farmed in the Cederberg region of South Africa, under strict environmental protocols. Farming provides consistent supply, year-round availability, and the ability to certify specific practices. Our rooibos extract comes from certified cultivated sources that meet organic standards.
Our Sourcing Philosophy
We choose wild-harvesting where it is ecologically sustainable and where wild plants produce superior phytochemical profiles. We choose certified cultivation where consistency, traceability, and standards compliance are paramount. In both cases, we prioritize relationships with producers who can document their practices and demonstrate genuine commitment to environmental stewardship.
The Whisper Face Serum leads with wild-harvested Kalahari Melon Seed Oil. The Royal Facial Serum is built on marula oil sourced from the plant's native savanna range. Explore the full ingredient story at our ingredient pages.
