Understanding Comedogenic Ratings: How to Choose Oils That Won't Clog Your Pores

If you've ever broken out after trying a new facial oil, comedogenic ratings may explain why. But this scale is more nuanced than its reputation suggests - and misunderstanding it leads to avoiding oils that might actually help your skin.

What Is the Comedogenic Scale?

The comedogenic rating scale runs from 0 to 5, indicating how likely an ingredient is to clog pores (comedones) in controlled test conditions:

  • 0: Won't clog pores
  • 1: Very low likelihood
  • 2: Moderately low
  • 3: Moderate
  • 4: Fairly high
  • 5: High likelihood of clogging pores

Ratings of 0 - 2 are generally considered safe for acne-prone skin. Ratings of 3 - 5 carry increasing risk of pore-clogging, particularly for oily and breakout-prone skin types.

Important Caveats

The original comedogenic ratings were established using rabbit ear models in the 1970s and 80s - a method that is not perfectly predictive of human skin response. Additionally, an ingredient's comedogenicity depends on concentration: an oil rated 3 at 100% concentration might be perfectly safe in a serum at 5%. Individual skin biology also matters significantly - some people tolerate coconut oil (rating: 4) without breakouts, while others react to jojoba (rating: 2).

The Fatty Acid Connection

Comedogenicity correlates strongly with fatty acid composition. High-oleic oils (like coconut, olive, and avocado) tend to have higher ratings because oleic acid can increase follicular plugging in predisposed skin. High-linoleic oils (like Kalahari melon seed oil at 0 - 1) tend to have very low ratings because linoleic acid is associated with sebum balancing and reduced comedonogenesis.

Best Low-Comedogenic Oils for Acne-Prone Skin

  • Kalahari Melon Seed Oil: 0 - 1
  • Hemp Seed Oil: 0
  • Rosehip Oil: 1
  • Jojoba (liquid wax): 2
  • Marula Oil: 3 - 4 (better for dry/mature skin)

Our Recommendation for Acne-Prone Skin

For oily, combination, or breakout-prone skin, our Whisper Face Serum (comedogenic rating 0 - 1) is our top recommendation. Its high linoleic content, fast-absorbing texture, and virtually odorless profile make it one of the most versatile facial oils for challenging skin types.
